MDAD News, a publication of the Maryland Association of the Deaf (MDAD) Winter 2006-07
"National Literary Society of the Deaf Honors the Late Leon Auerbach, Former Deaf Leader in Maryland," by Barbara Blakeman, MDAD Board Member Blakeman is also the chair of FOLDA-MD.
On Saturday, December 16, 2006 at the Silver Spring Community Library in Silver Spring, MD, the NLSD hosted a program in honor of Leon on his 90th birthday anniversary (July 16, 1916) and his 15th death anniversary (March 19, 1991). NLSD also helped MDAD celebrate its 50th anniversary (inc.1956). Leon, a native New Yorker and a graduate of both Fanwood School (White Plains, NY) and Gallaudet University, served two terms (1971 and 1973) as MDAD president. Guest Speaker: Raymond Kolander, a retired Gallaudet professor and close friend of Leon, highlighted Leon's life recognizing his valuable contribution to Maryland and notable leadership. Kim Pudans-Smith, who worked on MDAD’s 50th anniversary gala, said she found many articles of MDAD newsletters that Leon wrote and wanted to share one with the audience. It was said: "Irregular hours, no pay, no vacation, no paid holidays, no nothing except the great, great reward - knowledge .." Leon's daughter, Debbie and her husband, John Giancoli of Silver Spring, MD, also attended the event.
